Going into freelance writing is great fun, but it has some confusing hurdles to overcome. I've done what it sounds like most writers do: market research.
I wish I had discovered Freelance Switch's Hourly Rate Calculator sooner! I love the fact that it works proportionally, so it doesn't matter what currency you use--dollars, euros, pesos, etc.
Freelance Switch also has some great--though long--podcasts: Free Lance Radio. They talk about rates in Episode 1 during the first two segments. You can see the breakdown in the episode notes.

Clever. However, it fails ot take into account the local going rate. We don't want to be discounters. That brings down the rate for everyone. Maybe I could work less...
