New Gig at Green Diva Mom

I chase writing gigs all week long. Landing one is always exciting--who doesn't like to get a yes?

My most recent job is with a blog called Green Diva Mom. Yes, I realize I'm not a mom--a small detail I thought might be a problem. Glad it wasn't--yay!--but, I obviously won't be writing "What I do with my kid" stories. That would involve a whole lot of lying. Still, there are plenty of useful directions to go in.

GDM covers:

  • Autism
  • Beauty
  • Drinks
  • Family
  • Food
  • Health & Nutrition
  • Home Environment
  • Living
There is also a book section, a club, an information and resources section, interviews, and a newsletter.

So far I've written two articles for the Autism section and have planned another four. The first one, Martial Arts for Children with ASD, just came out yesterday. Give it a read and let me know what you think.

And if you have article ideas for me, I'm ready for them. Just drop me a note in the comments section.

Thanks!

  1. Interesting article Laura, I did some research on Autism a few years back for a literacy course and I can see how those with ASD might benefit from this kind of sport.

My youngest son (8) has done karate for quite some time and while, as the third child, he was more savvy than the other two anyway I certainly think it is has improved not only his coordination but also his mental stamina. Both my younger 2 boys are performance tennis players but mentality (tennis is a very tough game) the youngest is streaks ahead of where his brothers was at the same age.

I don't know how it is in the US but most kids over here don't get the exercise they need anymore which of course leads to obesesity and possibily restricts learning about social interaction and self discipline that team and individual sports help to develop. State schools no longer compete seriously at sport like when I was a teenager - in primary schools competitive sports are frowned upon - everyone must be a winner! In fact my second son was selected for a school's tennis tournament on the basis of "Paper, stones and scissors" - He's the county champion! I gave up with school sports long ago and I put my children's fitness in my own hands.

Maybe you could write about the state of sports in schools in the US. However, I do hope it's not quite so bad!

  2. That's a great idea! Thanks.

Just from casual observation I can tell you we have a lot of the same ridiculous no-real-reward we-all-win business going on here. I don't see how this is supposed to foster personal growth since challenging yourself is pointless and coming together as a team makes no difference.

Growing up I competed and won as much as a lost. I'm not scarred or suicidal. And I miss those days, even after games we lost.

Want to hear something truly inane? From what I hear, a lot of schools have eliminated recess!
